YAG Laser Capsulotomy
What is YAG Laser Capsulotomy?
YAG laser capsulotomy is a procedure to open a “window” in the thickened or opacified posterior lens capsule after cataract surgery, using a neodymium:yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Nd:YAG) laser.
How is YAG Laser Capsulotomy performed?
After placing your chin on the chinrest of the machine, two tiny laser aiming beams are focussed onto the posterior capsule of the lens implant allowing it to be precisely cut using laser energy. In many cases anaesthetic eye drops are instilled before a contact lens is placed on the eye to magnify the view and stabilise the eye. This procedure is performed in the clinic and is painless.
What condition is treated with YAG Laser Capsulotomy?
The original lens/cataract and the intraocular lens implant are held in place by the lens capsule. Posterior capsular opacification (PCO) is a common occurrence whereby the posterior lens capsule (sitting directly behind the intraocular lens implant) becomes thickened and partly opacified some months to years after cataract surgery. YAG laser cuts a window in the capsule to restore clear vision.
What is an example of a YAG/SLT laser?
The Ellex Tango Reflex laser is a modern laser system using co-axial optics allowing precise laser delivery. It combines YAG and SLT laser and can be used for YAG Laser Capsulotomy, YAG Laser Peripheral Iridotomy and Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT).
