Who we are

Retina Associates is a network of leading Ophthalmology practices dedicated to providing high-quality medical and surgery eye care across Sydney. Our history spans more than 45 years and reflects the evolution of specialist eye care in Sydney. What began as a single subspeciality retinal practice in Chatswood has grown into a connected group of clinics, across the city’s north, west, south-west, inner-west and eastern suburbs.

Our Expertise

Across our network, patients have access to over 35 fellowship-trained eye specialists with subspeciality expertise in surgical retina, medical retina, glaucoma, cornea, oculoplastics and cataract surgery, allowing patients to receive coordinated care from clinicians with deep, focused.

Each practice has its own story and identity but all share one mission: to deliver individualised, expert care for our patients. The practices are equipped with state-of-the-art diagnostic and therapeutic technology to support accurate diagnosis and treatment common and complex eye problems, including OCT and OCT-A scanning, ultra-widefield
retinal imaging, angiography, ultrasound, topography, automated perimetry and laser treatment.

Our Commitment to Patients

Our team of Ophthalmologists is supported by Orthoptists and administrative staff who are committed to the highest standards of patient care. From the first point of contact to follow-up after treatment, our goal is to ensure that every patient feels informed, supported, and respected throughout their experience with us. We believe quality eye care combines clinical expertise with clear communication and genuine compassion. We take the time to understand each patient’s needs, explain conditions and treatment options clearly, and involve patients in decisions about their care. We communicate with referring doctors and optometrists to ensure continuity of care and a coordinated approach to managing eye health. Our commitment is to provide evidence-based care, that is tailored to the individual needs of patients, in an environment where they feel well-supported.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an Ophthalmologist?

Ophthalmologists, also known as eye specialists, ophthalmic surgeons, or eye surgeons, are medical doctors who have worked in hospitals gaining experience in general medicine and surgery after medical school, and have then undertaken at least 4-5 years of Ophthalmology training. Before being selected for specialist Ophthalmology training, they typically complete postgraduate degrees and/or perform research. During specialist training doctors (Ophthalmology registrars) learn how to diagnose and treat eye conditions, become proficient surgeons, and must pass rigorous exams before gaining college fellowship.

All the ophthalmic specialists at Retina Associates are Fellows of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (RANZCO) and many have done further subspecialty fellowship training in areas of interest including surgical retina, medical retina, glaucoma, cornea, oculoplastics and cataract surgery.

In addition to private practice, many of the specialists have academic appointments at universities, continue to perform research, and work in major public teaching hospitals where they are involved in teaching medical students and Ophthalmology registrars, contributing to the continual improvement of ophthalmic care. The specialists operate at various public and private hospitals within Sydney.

What is an Orthoptist?

Orthoptists are university trained allied health professionals specialising in eye care. Patients visiting one of our practices will usually be seen by an Orthoptist first who will take a history, check the visual acuity, measure the intraocular pressures, instil eye drops to
dilate the pupils and perform various diagnostic tests ahead of the consultation with the Ophthalmologist.

What is an Optometrist?

Optometrists are university trained professionals who prescribe glasses and contact lenses and examine the eyes to detect signs of disease. If required, Optometrists refer patients to an Ophthalmologist for further investigation and treatment of their eye condition.
