About
Gerald Liew is a Medical Retina subspecialist. His expertise is in the diagnosis, treatment, and care of patients with retinal conditions, in particular macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusions, and inherited retinal diseases.
Gerald graduated in medicine from the University of Sydney Medical School with first class honours, undertook general medical training at Concord, Royal Prince Alfred, and Westmead hospitals, and completed ophthalmology specialty training at Sydney Eye Hospital. He then undertook subspecialty fellowship training at Moorfields Eye Hospital, London, with a focus on medical retinal / macular conditions, and inherited retinal diseases. These fellowships were supported by the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (RANZCO) Eye Foundation.
He is heavily involved in research including clinical trials of the latest treatments for retinal conditions, and methods to improve diagnosis and monitoring of macular diseases, such as diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration. He was awarded his Masters of Medicine and PhD from the University of Sydney and has published over 220 peer reviewed research articles in major journals with leading international specialists from Australia, UK, USA, and Singapore. He is an Associate Professor with the Westmead Clinical School, University of Sydney, and a member of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, American Academy of Ophthalmologists, and European Society of Retinal Specialists (EURETINA). He is also an Honorary Medical Officer at Westmead Hospital, and a Visiting Medical Officer at the Children’s Hospital, Westmead.
Gerald’s interests include age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusions, and inherited retinal dystrophies such as retinitis pigmentosa and Stargardt disease. He can speak conversational Mandarin.
